What's In Your GTH Account?

Monday morning had resurfaced again, as it usually does every Monday morning. And as was also usual with Mondays, i was not inclined to go to work but seeing as my bills will not miraculously pay themselves with me lounging in bed under covers, lemming on slices of cucumber and watching S3 of the The Good Wife, i organized myself and hustled off to work.
As i entered the bank premise, i noticed we had a couple of early customers hanging around, waiting for the bank to open its doors for business. One of them, a lady, looked so very familiar, like we have some sort of history together but i couldn’t place her face, for the life of me. I chucked it up to one of the many faces i encounter everyday in the course of work and went about the business of putting my six-inch heels and my game face on. It wasn’t until i saw my other colleagues hugging and cooing at her that it clicked. I couldn’t blame me tho: there was no way i could’ve recognised that chic without her power suit and high-heeled pumps! Oh yes, she was a former colleague, from another branch. But in the place of sophisticat, i saw a woman that had been beaten down by her circumstances; hard-drawn face, badly applied make-up, hair an absolute mess. I was beyond shocked.

Her words as she left that morning with tears in her eyes were, “As you sit down here attending to your customers, please, have your Plan B mapped out. I am talking from experience!” She had been relieved of her employment about a year ago, without warning...without any entitlements. As at the time of her forced resignation, she had little or no savings! As it were, she took to selling costume jewelleries to sustain the family {hubby is a struggling business man}. The money realised from that business could barely feed the family talk more of paying school fees. Her kids were kicked out of school!!! This was few months ago.
Present day: Maureen* had just walked into her unit, thankful she was on time for that morning’s meeting. She walked into a very sober unit. She thought someone died. Nobody had died. Everything was okay except, well, her relationship with her employer had just been terminated. Didn’t she get a text message, her colleague asked? She did, only she didn’t understand what it meant. It took a couple more hours and a few tears to make her understand what the message implied. SACKED!
What is in your Go-To-Hell {GTH} account?
Our comfort zone is our biggest enemy. We put so much faith in our monthly pay checks that we forget to make plans in case of eventualities. It sounds simple to say, “I’ll start a Plan B with my severance package!” Very simple, yes, but what Plan B? How viable is this Plan B? Who is the target market? How reliable is the supply chain? Which is easier: Losing most of your severance pay trying to cruise an uncharted Plan B or investing fresh funds {severance pay} into a tested and certified-viable Plan B?
What is in your GTH account?
Some of us have different shades, lengths and textures of Peruvian hair in our GTH account. Lots of good that would do us when push comes to shove. Totally. At least, we’ll look good while begging for alms on the streets. Some of us have designer bags and wanna-be designer bags in our GTH account. Some of us have landed properties, some of us millions in savings, some of us humongous debts, some of us viable businesses.
When we were younger, if you heard {usually from not-so-well-meaning friends} that a boyfriend was gonna break up with you, you tried you damn best to get in your words first. It feels really great being the one that walked away rather than the one left holding the stink bag. If per chance the break up came without warning, its easier to deal with heart break when you have a rebound guy/girl by the side, someone who really loves you but couldn’t do much about that love earlier, seeing as you were previously occupied! Psychology 101.
#NoteToSelf: Hazel, shore up your GTH account!

Food for thought. Most people rarely think of a plan b, we always think it would either not happen or even if it does who would hatched out a plan before then. There is no time like now.

Thank you... I couldn't have read this at a better time. I've recently got a great job, and the dough's begun rolling in. I've been fighting to keep a level head and invest like all the books say U should (Rich Dad,Poor Dad etc), but the lancing glances of haughty female colleagues sporting these 'wannabe designer bags' you speak of -have got me heading to the shops with my platinum credit card. I know better. And this, this blog, it strengthens my resolve. They all oughta take a hike, the GTH kind! :) God bless you.

Thanks for this reminder. It did me like magic when I was downsized from OBIN. But thank God for the fantastic severance package and the fact that I got another job immediately.

But I learned my lesson...as the saying goes "make hay while the sun shines"
