Scary Saturday

Saturday 12, i experienced Lagos firsthand.
We had just finished this 3-day amazingly inspiring training {who woulda thunk it?} organized by my job and as is with such trainings, we exited the hall feeling like we can take on whatever the world threw at us...We were ready to change the world.
Someone had parked their car right behind mine, blocking my exit and so i was forced to wait for whoever it was to finish their tete-a-tete with the facilitator. I was just about to start fretting when the owner of the car came out...and she is this really nice mother-of-two that sat behind me all through the training.
Both of our cars were parked on the kerb just by the express {the training was in one of our branches on Ikorodu Road}. I had walked round to my passenger side, just a feet away from the express, to offload the books i bought {still can’t believe i bought that many books} and my handbag when she came out. I mentioned she was nice, right? So i said to her,
“I should have your number!” to which she replied,
“I’ll do better. Give me your BB pin”.

She walked to where i was and took my phone to get my pin out. Somehow, we started gisting. We were so carried away with gisting, we didn’t even realize the other participants had all left. It was just the two of us...and our cars there.10 minutes. 20 minutes. 30 minutes. We stood there talking.
In this middle of this particular gist, a scruffy-looking guy approached us. I had no idea where the dude materialized from. One minute, it was just Nice-Lady and I. This next minute, he was there, flashing up the gun he tucked in his waistband and stretching out his hand. No words! Just gun and a stretched hand but his message was loud and clear. I had never been so afraid in my entire life. I have no idea what went through my mind at that moment but as soon as i sighted the gun and the guy’s accomplice on a bike, i knew i had to get out of there.
I was wearing heels oo but y’all shoulda seen how i hightailed it out of the there, running for my dear life...ON HEELS. The adrenaline rush ehn. I left my newly acquired friend there and took off, all the while bracing for the bullet i was so sure would hit my back. The bullet never came. Somehow, i turned to find out what was deterring them and saw Mrs Nice-Lady standing there alone, looking dazed. In broad daylight, my people, these duo collected everything she had on her {Blackberry Touch and purse} and took off...in 47seconds flat!!!
I felt/feel really guilty. If i hadn’t asked her for her number, we woulda both be home sans this frightful experience. To make matters worse, i took off without a care about her. *sad tortured face*
I hope she’s ok. My poor heart still skips when i remember the guy’s bloodshot eyes and the gun he flashed us. *shudder* God help us in this country!
In other news, while i wasn’t looking, an alien kidnapped my i-can-never-under-the-rationale-behind-11-ablebodied-men-chasing-a-round-object-around-a-large-lush-field-in-the-name-of-football husband and replaced him with a man i do not recognize, football-wise. At first, his excuse was, “Babes, i have important clients to meet tomorrow. They’ll definitely discuss these matches and i need to be prepared!” I cannot argue with that superior reasoning but mbanu, let’s call a spade a spade...my husband has morphed into a footie freak. Wonders!
I don’t quite know how i feel about this. Before i married this man, i was the football fanatic. He couldn’t be bothered. Like seriously, i had never met a guy that didn’t like football until my husband. So, while my mates were learning the game so they could be their husbands’ game buddies, i gradually gave up football...and started watching basketball playoffs. Basketball is not football though...
The day Chelsea beat Barcelona, i thought my husband was about to run mad...
“Babes, did you see that kick?” Ignored...i was busy counting sheep
“Babes, you gotta come see this goal. What???!” Ignored...still counting sheep
When he realised i wasn’t as enthusiastic as he obviously was, he turned to his son Chets...
“Chetanna, did you see that man? Did you see how that goal cleared that net?” Only Chetanna was too busy pursuing the wall gecko he just discovered!
I’m sure between Chets and I, he was frustrated and so he whipped out his phone and starting calling his footie buddies. Footie buddies!!! Ha! I feel slightly cheated!
I doubt if i’ll ever get back to watching football as religiously as i used to but i dunno if i’m comfy with this new development. For crying out loud, he had the telly in PIP mode today, so he could watch the game between ManCity & the Queen’s people and the game between ManU & Who-ever-it-was-they-were-playing-against at the same time. Madness. Cute tho..
Admit it boo, you loooove football. Never say never!!
How has everyone been?

Hahahaha *rolling*
The picture of you running down ikorodu road is funny, but then, I'm reminded that your friend was robbed. Let's thank God you were both not hurt. Now, lemme go & pray that my husband never catches the football bug. Things are just fine the way they are.

Thank God nothing happened to you. It's a pity about your friend. I hope she's okay now.
About the football, I'm echoing what Gbemisoke said o: I like things just the way they are!! Can't imagine my husband doing the football thing. I've always said that we're not a football family; that had better not change, biko!

October 2010, same Ikorodu road. Anthony bus stop. A collegue had dropped me off to board a taxi, this was at about 8pm. I had no idea it was a dark spot (places you don't loiter around cos of risk of being attacked), i guess the wait for a taxi had made a target. No words uttered, the gun put an end to my facial expression wondering what the chap wanted with/from me, I wasn't so 'lucky', he grabbed my laptop bag and somehow still managed to fire a shot, before hopping on a bike that was apparently an accomplice. Next thing I knew my upper back hurt like it was on fire, I placed my hand there and saw blood. As we see in the movies I expected to start seeing stars but No. Everywhere was quiet, No one sent me, I shudder when I consider what if I had slumped. Thankfully I still had my handbag on me, I made few phone calls. Hospital, xray, (unnecessary) stitches, weeks of honey dressing. God had delivered me from a bullet shot at close range to my NECK, I have the scar to show for it. I am blessed the bullet didn't penetrate. E ba mi yin oluwa logo...so nne I rejoice with you for keeping u safe

I understand this sort of thing is a regular occurence on Ikorodu Road, even in the day time like my experience. Na wa! God will continue to keep us!

Sorry about the robbery ooo. Your friend must have frozen, I hope you were able to console her.

I have a strong feeling that the gun was fake. A lot of these people flash fake guns these days.

As for your hubby, hehehe...

May 13, 2012, 10:15am, in the company of my beautiful family, we were robbed just in front of King's Solomon hospital in anthony. I still freeze when i remember the look of the guy's face and the feel of the black gun on my skin. I kept looking at my children's face, looking over to see if my husband was ok,they took my wedding bands, jewellery, phone, wrist watch. But we are alive and everything can and would be replaced in Jesus name.

Keep safe o.
